A picaresque tale from Nashville of one brother's love for another in the Southern Storytelling Tradition sex, violence, love, betrayal, literature, seedy politics, fishing, authentic country locales, drinking, music, death, home cooking and redemption.

In an effort to put his life back on track, Ray Cantien, a wounded and decorated Iraq War veteran living in Nashville, starts a private investigation company and asks his under-achieving brother, Danny, to assist in a job. What starts as an unusual but routine case, the recovery of a kidnapped mule, spirals out of control and results in Ray’s unexpected and violent demise. While investigating Ray’s death, Danny, with the help of his insightful girlfriend, Rose, and quirky buddies, Garcia and Styron, is caught in the middle of a lifelong feud between a crooked politician and an influential Nashville music producer. Along the way he confronts the ghosts of his childhood and unearths raw emotions he thought had been buried for good.

Three southern families–one modest, one wealthy, and one a corrupt political machine–overlap, intertwine, and clash when Buddy, a prized red mule, goes missing. Danny and Ray Cantien, brothers with a troubled past and an uncertain future, are hired to solve the mystery of Buddy's disappearance. They find themselves up against greed and corruption, both powerful and dangerous, and they unveil more than they signed on for. Danny and Ray learn, sometimes the hard way, that integrity doesn't guarantee longevity and that money can't buy love, friendship, loyalty, fidelity, or solace. It’s no wonder they lead “minimalist” lifestyles and take pride and joy in simple pleasures.

"The Four Hour Rule" is a truly immersing story, rich with southern charm. The people and settings are all deep and vibrant with virtues and flaws, though the balance between the two varies from character to character, place to place. I found myself imagining what it would be like grabbing a beer with the Cantien brothers at Bowman’s Grille or being on the receiving end of Danny Cantien’s smile. And when his world started to crumble, I felt his pain and cried his tears. Before reading this book, I had never even heard of a red mule, but by the end I was a believer that an animal like Buddy, the hero in so many ways, could exist somewhere and would heal the weary with his gentle, godlike disposition. On the other end of the spectrum, downtown Nashville has plausible evil milling about, practically invincible behind the fortress of wealth and power, evil that only a good dose of southern justice could possibly remedy. The rest of the characters may act with good in mind, or they at least have understandable motives if they choose to veer from that path, but like in real life, they often drown in their own vices.

So "The Four Hour Rule" has something for everyone. It’s primarily a mystery, but in part it is a family saga, a political thriller, a romance, a comedy, a tragedy, and an unforgettable journey.

The Four Hour Rule edition by Robert Daniel Brooks Wiley Dean Barnard Janis Brooks Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Look no further this novel perfectly encapsulates the feel of a carriage-drawn tour through the darker side of Nashville and its feeder cities. Power, ego, sex, anthropomorphism, loss, and self-actualization; this book has it all, in vivid technicolor! Next time you're in town, you won't need to pay someone to drive you around Broadway and 2nd Avenue; you'll much prefer to walk it yourself.
Full of fun and feeling, this book was a quick and enjoyable read. I'd recommend it to anyone, but being from the South made it that much more close to my heart and interests
A nicely spun tale of people and imagery. An entertaining read and there are some parts that are hilarious! I've recommended it to several people and they all enjoyed it.
Great story. Lots of twists and turns incorporating suspense, intrigue and humor that ultimately provides life lessons about love, family and finding oneself. Set in Nashville with forays to the deep south. Really enjoyed it.
Wondeful! Like a warm blanket, I kept wanting to curl up to enjoy this story. The author captures the reader with his artistic descriptions, making us feel we are a part of the scene. Family saga, suspense and intrigue - Loved this book and I cannot wait for #2!
Let me begin this review by saying "You have to read this book!" I literally could not put it down. I began reading the novel one afternoon during a tumultuous storm and finished it a mere 2 days later after a 10-hour grueling cross country trip to which I was totally oblivious, being so immersed in the story.

Four Hour Rule is both humorous and tragic. It explores the themes of political corruption, violence, literature, family, and love. Set in rural Alabama, Music City USA, and pastoral countryside outside Nashville, one is quickly transported to the South and yearns to drink a beer and attend a Buddy Guy concert with the Danny, Ray, and Rose. Particularly pleasing is the authors' use of the narrator's past and present in writing this story.

I am so envious to those who have yet to experience this literary pleasure. Read it! You will fall in love with the Cantien brothers, Rose, Homer, Buddy, and all the other wonderful characters (even Dante!) in this sweet and sorrowful Southern story.
The Four Hour Rule is a romp through the deep south, and is reminiscent of the Pat Conroy novels I love by transporting the reader into an environment that is richly described through sights sound and smells. What do you like in the novels you read...drama, suspense, and politics? How about sex (or the promise of it)? Do you like barnyard animals? (Okay, this has nothing to do with the sex) Dante and Buddy are sure to remind you of some person you know through the author's use of anthropomorphism. You will find all of this and more in this short novel.

Only 99 cents to download to your , a steal for this intriguing read...I know you will enjoy it!
